Letter to My Boss

Dear Friends,

I just want to share something about "What Makes a Good Boss?". Well, a lot of wise people says that there are some attributes for the best boss:
- Fair - Honest - Understanding - Approachable - A good communicator

And we are bosses of our own life (for sure)... anyway... but how to dealing positively with a "bad" boss that can bring unexpected benefits --
Current Case:
For sure - I'm only a guardian dog in small group of smart people, and I try to lead this smart people in my department. I've read a book about "Plain Talk About Leadership", and I wish my boss would read this as well. He's a terror and has absolutely no people skills. He rules with threats and intimidation. Everybody has the feeling that any one of us would be stabbed in the back if the company would benefit in some way. Even if we're able to tolerate this ongoing browbeating, we fear that we'll, be caught in the next round of layoffs.

People in my department are more productive and happier than most in the company (I think), but the horrible environment around us tends to overshadow everything I do. I have begun to question whether a 'people approach' to leadership is realistic in today's dog-eat-dog corporate world.

It seems that each week our company becomes more and more numbers focused and less and less people oriented. We've lost many good people because of this hostile atmosphere. I've considered leaving myself but haven't done so because of my team and passion of this industry. As you can imagine, morale is horrible.
What can one lowly guardian dog like me do to lead in a positive manner in a company that doesn't care about its people? Anybody can help me out?

Heart to heart:
Well after reflecting in the mirror -- I have also some answers for above case....
It may be of little consolation, but above case indicate that I am only one of many who experience this type of work environment. The most important point for me to remember is: It's not me! It's not my behavior that is causing my boss to fuss and fume. It is simply a style of leadership, an approach that's unlikely to change, even if he or she reads above statement about "What Makes a Good Boss?". This intimidating form of leadership somehow has brought this person to a senior management level, so why change?

Throughout my career that I will have many bosses-some good, some bad. Most people tell me, and my own experience confirms it, that during my career, I'll have more bad bosses than good ones. But somehow, I can learn from all of them. Everyone has leadership traits that I may wish to emulate-and leadership traits that I will want to avoid.

Again, when I am forced to deal with my boss's angry outbursts, don't become emotionally involved. I just simply remember, it's not me. Imagine that I am watching a TV movie. Listen carefully to the message. Watch the ways the character gets the message across. The threats and intimidation don't matter. It's just a movie-only this one I can't turn off. Some movie characters I like; some I don't like. But all of them make life interesting. And being exposed to such characters in real life helps strengthen us to endure the day-to-day challenges that all of us face.

Once I understand the situation, I am learning to carry out the instructions in my own way. Use the friendly, communicative, enthusiastic leadership style that I often discuss among team. Chances are that the people who report to me know what I am going through. I think - they'll appreciate my running interference for them and will be especially responsive to my novice leadership skill.

Message for this:
Chances are that your boss won't be your boss forever. He or she may retire, may be fired by the board because of his or her offensive treatment of people or, who knows, may be promoted. With excellent leadership skills, the new "big boss" could be you. Certainly if conditions are so distasteful that you can't endure another day on the job, you may wish to make a job change, but be very cautious. The odds are about seven out of ten that your new "big boss" will be as bad as the old one.

I agree that the fear of layoffs has an. adverse effect on people. While necessary in a few instances (if a company can't meet its Friday payroll, there may be no choice), in most cases layoffs weaken companies. When a layoff is threatened, many employees brush off their resumes. Some will initiate an active job search even before they know whether or not they will be affected. If opportunities arise, many jump ship. The ones who don't move are so paralyzed that they can't give their full attention to serving customers. Productivity almost certainly slows as morale begins to freefall.

Again - be your own boss and motivate yourself!

Computer in My Brain

Wondering a computing with a brain power, is it possible? Personal thought, I don't think we are ready as a society for implants, because of the possibility of control by others. When we have been able to eliminate big brother, now rampant, then maybe... the possibilities are absolutely endless. If control is not central to the issue, then you don't need implants. Once you create an interface to the human nervous system, then you can eliminate things like tiredness or laziness, and get rid of fat... you can put people to work.. and that makes for excellent slaves. remember the basic idea of the matrix. addon portable computer power is available now.... you can buy memory for under a dollar a gigabyte now. applications are endless.. but to control people physically... its an application that is the dream of the evil empire... (yeah.. Darth Vader!!!)

There is no technology with more potential, especially if you add in quantum computing, but also there is no technology inherently more dangerous, and more capable of making human slaves.

BUT in the opposite mindset, did you actually read what I wrote? Too much negativity has already held the human race back WAY to far! People are going to die!!! Ethics like that has been killing the human race for ever! Don't you find that a little ridiculous in this day and age, especially with the knowledge and technology we have at our finger tips. Dead is a little final. Enhancing my life with a chip or two.... what the heck, BRING IT ON, I'll have a dozen thanks. I would love to live to 200, 2000. Couldn't care less if it takes a chip or two. Rather that, than feed a worm!

There is a whole big universe out there waiting for me to explore, chip me if it gets me out there. Most people do question mortality (or rather immortality), in their last seconds. Me, chip away dude, I'll love it.

Somehow, there is a difference between chipping and tagging, and of course - everything should be monitored, but nothing should be held back because of pure negativety disguised as "ethical issues". You don't like it, great, don't use it. I want to see my kids grow up, their kids grow up and their kids too, if it is at all possible. And I do want the same for them. If I could be downloaded on to a chip until a new body/blank is created for me, I would be the happiest little "living" being in the universe, believe me.

Less killing, more living!

By the way, 6 - 7 billion people on this planet. Not very many when you take populating and looking after our little solar system into account. We also die to damn fast which doesn't bode well for exploring our own tiny little galaxy! We as the human race need all the help we can get, and these researchers and scientists are right on the money.

As I said, "Bring It On"!

Day Dream...

Suddenly, I have a dreamed of seeing my face printed in the pages of “Bicycling” magazine. This time, though, I’m confident I will finally have a dream bike. An issue of “Bicycling” without a bike shootout is like an issue of “Playboy” without a centerfold (hehehe...kidding). So I’ve taken it upon myself to review some of information of the hottest 2009 road bikes out there.

Bottom Line --
Buy It If: You want the best bike in the entire world... and RIDE IT!!
Don’t Buy It If: You’re an idiot!

Confusion in My Life

In my head... What is it about life that makes it so real to us? Why are we so sure it's not an illusion? What if we are all actors in a movie and the sets around us change according to the script? Who is writing the script? What if the script writer goes on strike? What happens next? Does life as we know it, STOP?

Somehow, what if we are the script writer, and we decide what happens in our lives? What if we are also the producer and the director, and we decide on the sets, and the direction we want the script to take? What happens if we are only an actor, and someone else is the producer and the director? All we can do is follow the script and listen to the Director. How does all this impact how our life is played out?

What if the same is happening with life? Where do we find the "extras" to life? Do we need a secret password to unlock them? Have they always been there but we've been ignoring them? Maybe the "technology" wasn't there for us to have access to them before? Maybe we weren't ready to have access to them?

Questions? Questions? Questions?

I WANT ANSWERS!

Gadget Freak: Blackberry Gemini

Whole world knows that I’m addicted to new gadget - new Blackberry Gemini. Blackberry, most people like it, although some are less inclined to admit it. currently, I use my Blackberry so much, that sometimes my computer goes untouched for days. This is because I can essentially do everything I needed my computer to do from my Blackberry... I can browse, read and send emails, check cinema site, etc. etc. As a matter of fact, it had been so long since I last actually used my computer that I didn’t even know that I had some virus action on it from some torrent I must of downloaded way back when. Ops!

So to find out just *exactly* how much I used my Blackberry, I downloaded an app from Early Sail called “I Love Blackberry” It’s available for an OTA install here: http://download.earlysail.com/i_love_blackberry/ It runs in the background and tracks how much you use your Blackberry. I ran it for exactly 7 days to see what happened. Here’s the results:

Daily Average
Total: 72 Times for 2h 44m 8sWork Hours: 34 Times for 52m 0sNights and Weekends: 38 Times for 1h 52m 8s

Weekly Average
Total: 246 Times for 8h 4m 17sWork Hours: 170 Times for 4h 20m 2sNights and Weekends: 76 Times for 3h 44m 15s

This should be rock-solid proof that I’m addicted, and should sober me up a bit. I remember telling someone that “Now, I can’t live without my Blackberry because of emails,” in which he responded that “that is sad.” I agreed with him, but that exchange still didn’t make me change my habits. This is for a multitude of reasons. For one, as mentioned above, my Blackberry *is my damn computer*. I use it in place of everything on do on my desktop computer. And this is of importance, since everything I do–from managing daily routines, to reading news, and to communicating with friends and family–is accomplished on the computer. Next, there’s the simple fact that a Blackberry is still a damn cell phone.

Finally, blackberry is a toy. Once you have it, you’re going to use it, just like anything else fun and dynamic. Again, blackberry can be anything you want it to be. Just a phone? Done. Phone and email machine? Done. Super ultra mega social networking machine? Done. Your life on the go? ya ya done.

While I’m not going to wear my blackberry usage as a badge of honor (although this post would seem to indicate that I’m doing just that), I’m not going to deny that I’m a new addicted user. And I’m OK with that. That only further validates me shameless usage. So yeah, I’m a geekberry addict. As if I didn’t already know that.

Yuck!

Am I going to get shouted down for this one, no they do! Dont be so silly, mines not like that.

They spit chewing gum in the urinals its horrible, so so many dont wash hands one was even standing letting go, whilst eating a sandwich, then changed hands yuck!

Wish they could put big signs up saying now WASH those hands!

My Pain And I Don't Knowing It

Again, I stumbled upon these quotes, is the pain readily apparent? I hope the authors never attempted to kill themselves after exposing their obvious tendencies toward masochism. The intensity of pain exhibited by words has never caught my attention until these:

“Waiting is painful. Forgetting is painful. But not knowing which to do is the worse kind of suffering.” (From Paolo Coelho!, the book from which this quote was taken from made me decide to stop reading Coelho for a time, too dragging!)

“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, pain of love lasts a lifetime.” (My simple comment, is it really love?? Or rejection that pains you the most?)

“Many of us spend our whole lives running from feeling with the mistaken belief that you cannot bear the pain. But you have already borne the pain. What you have not done is feel all you are beyond the pain.” (My simple comment, how do you feel you are beyond the pain? pain reliever overload? or decide to meditate the pain away? I don’t know which of the two works... looking the answer from myself)

Next Question: Truth...

37 Years in Reality

I know...My birthday transpired without much fanfare. Around 20 people greeted me through sms and some calls. At that time, I was at my girlfriend's home, hadn't slept a wink the night before.

Several years ago, I fancy dreaming of myself to be a highly successful individual by the time I'll reach 35. I will already be a top class executive, will have my own fancy car, white house with picket fence and a tiled, colored roof, starting a family perhaps with a stable career to boot. At 37, none of that has been realized. I couldn't even afford my dream Apple that I have been eyeing for months. Mundane realities occupy most of my waking time -- the need to work for a measly sum to earn a decent living. Life hasn't offer absolutes for me. I am just dancing with the rhythm of life's offerings that come my way. there are a lot of frustrations, of not being able to measure up to anyone's ideals, including my own... my own denial!

At 37, I have been through many episodes, left by people whom I thought will spend the rest of their lives with me in fantasy world, found frustrations over not getting the job that I want. Then there are plus points too, I found someone that I believed she is my missing part. I learned how to bolt out of a failed relationship. I found myself in a rat race, not really understanding what I am competing for and with whom. A reciprocated passionate love also came my way, which I could only hope will forever stay. Somehow, my mum constantly tells me that I am just doing good with whatever it is that I have right now. But I am racing against time, my step sister, included. My step sister assures me that nothing is wrong with me. but then again, how can other people say such a thing? Must I believe that I am fine? or must I believe anything at all?

All About Twitter

I wrote something about Facebook and related social networking community before, now I have my thought about Twitter. Somehow, I wake up in the morning, whats my first thought? “I GOTTA GET MORE FRIENDS”

Who lives like this? These people really completely miss the value in twitter. Popularity is not an indication of quality, check out this search for “followers” on Summize, its seems to be everyone’s biggest worry and I just don’t get it.We now have the usual Social networking whores advising us on programs to get to 10,000 followers in 30 days, can it be done? Yes, absolutely but you will have built up a community of 10,0000 idiots just like you...
Your twitter stream is a community of friends, why would you infect it with this bullshit, would you do this in real life?

I am positive you wouldn’t.Take for example the famous twitter purge of spammers this week, where people lost 100’s of followers or practically 10% of their friends, I lost slightly over .01% and I had to even check that using some numbers tool.

I never watch numbers, I watch content, I like what friends do and what they recommend to me.... which is none... Thats Twitter’s value to me.

Next Question: Whats Twitter’s value to you? are you a number jockey?

My Mirror

There is a quote says that every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad... is it true?

In my mine, one of the challenges of new era generation is that I have access to lifestyle models and opportunities all over the world. I’ve got an abundance of choices available to me, and this can lead to being overwhelmed and a habit of questioning whatever I have and wondering whether the grass is greener on the other side. And of course I still have social pressure from my families and peers who place their expectations on me. I’m dealing with more opportunities and demands than ever before - it’s no wonder I get a little unsure of what I want!

Idea of doing what I love is of no use to me, if I’m unsure what I want and love. And nobody else can tell me what I love - the whole point of doing what I love is that I’m doing what I love, rather than the things other people tell me should love. But while I can’t learn what I love from other people, I can learn how to meet my true self and discover what I love for myself. There are lots of ways to discover what I love, and one of the most unexpected routes to discovering what I love is through my fear in past.

Next question: How to face it?

Words

Gloomy felling often pinching me to write something nasty. Its easy to get irate on the internet as well. Why do words have value? Why should someone saying something charged, if they don't mean in that way, matter? The common usage of the word in such a manner is really not that old, and currently the meanings are linked. Thats why I did it, after all. Now, for me the important thing about controlling words is actually about growing up. I understand that language is often changing, and perhaps in 30 years time it will be acceptable to use the term "nigger or native or etc" as merely expressing friendship for all races. Clearly, I am not there yet, and to claim otherwise is utterly disgenous. The thing is about language is it rarely hurts us to stop using certain words; in theory I can head to lunacy by making too many words taboo, but most stories related about not being able to say common sense words are exaggerated stories. Its not too hard, if I am honest, to see which words are charged and which are not, and I can make a conscious effort to stop saying those that are.

End of Reality

My mind really sick lately... well, I just want to share - have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then someone come in, wanders into your stupid life...You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain.

I hate myself... because I lied to admit myself that I need love...

I Lies...

This is massive subject. We are brought up by parents who teach us that to tell lies is wrong.. yeah.. telling THEM lies is wrong! Then I also learn through life experience that adults lie all of the time. (Father Christmas, the tooth fairy?) They lie to us, they lie to each other. They groom us in the skill without even realising what they are doing, just the same as their parents did to them.

The untruths come into several categories. Some are told as a direct answer to a question, probably to get the respondent out of trouble, but some are told to cause hurt and distress for reasons best known only to the liar themselves. Some folks are compulsive liars, who actually tell a lie and then believe what they have told.

The subject of lying within this life is an odd one. I think, in the main, it is a given that punters expect guy like me, they see to be professional liars. I hate telling lies. I do my darndest not to. I have fine tuned my repertoire so that the telling of lies is not done.

This life is a melting pot of untruth and dishonesty. I try very hard not to be contributory, but what I am doing is a dishonest practice somehow, especially for those of us who were married.
Its those damn questions.. now if I could move away from some of those...

We are living in the world of lies...

World of Stress

I talked about moving out for something different can be stressful, so I was interested to read what Google had to say on this subject. And they have 12 tips on beating stressSomehow, what I find amusing is that most of those tips have been around since Adam was a lad -- they missed off eating an apple a day, I noticed!

I have been to the hospital for my check up, and the nurse there checked my blood pressure. It was fine. I never expected anything else. I eat sensibly and I did little exercise in the office - probably because I eat well, and I am more on top of the bills than I used to be.
In addition, I am not for one minute knocking anyone who takes supplements or vitamins etc., but I think if you eat sensibly, all of the things you need should be there in your basic diet, People can become obsessed with taking things they don't really need, and if they miss taking them - that's when unnecessary stress can manifest itself. People these days seem to punish themselves for being alive.

Interestingly, they say you should "get it off your chest"........ well in that case, I suppose blogging is one way of doing that.

Working Appreciation is Earned, Not Given!

Being an empty glass is good, because we can absorb more. I’m a big believer in the sharing of ideas and challenging of one another that guest interaction can bring. One has to look no further than the month-long to what a group of innovative, forward-thinking people can do when they unite for a common goal.

Instead, life is just like a box of chocolates stays true to its name – you never know what you’re going to get. But, above all, it forces me to take a step back and think – in this case, about what I appreciate in life. Appreciation can be interpreted in many different formats, but one thing that comes to my mind, and that is relevant to my current life situation, is the appreciation relationship between manager and employee. Think about your own career – what are you doing with your life? Where are you working at this very moment? Do you feel valued, appreciated, and important to the overall team? Or, are you just another easily replaceable cog in the system?

I could easily tell you to go find a job where you’re seen as irreplaceable, but more often than not, especially early in our careers, that’s much easier said than done.

Then try to give people a reason to appreciate you...No one is going to appreciate you if you don’t give them a reason to do so. Presenting your value to a company starts with you. It involves going above and beyond the call of duty and saying, ‘This is why I’m an invaluable member of the team. This is why you need me here. This is why you SHOULD be appreciating me and what I bring to the table.’

But, it’s not all about you only – you have to be appreciative of what you’ve got. Far too often we say it’s “just a job,” but there are millions of unemployed people out there who would be thrilled to be in your full-time position. Be grateful for what you have, what you earned, and that appreciation will show in your overall work ethic.

Appreciation isn’t given, it’s earned. It’s easy to forget, but so important to remember. If you want people to see the value in you, you have to live that value in everything you do. The appreciation revolution starts with you!

Foolish Note - Indonesia

Just want to have 'quick mindset' - in a nutshell, this is what I want to share: Indonesia needs economic growth for development to occur; for economic growth, urbanization of the majority of the population currently living in more than 800,000 small villages is a necessity; the current urban centers cannot accommodate the present urban population adequately, leave alone taking on any additional burden. Hence the proposition has forced itself on us: we need new urban centers to accommodate the hundreds of millions who must get out of villages for Indonesia's economic growth.

The question before us: how do we do it - before we run out of time? Think it over!!

I Am Fooled by Randomness of Being Lucky or Smart

In a gloomy emotional feeling, somehow I am trying heart to focus and concentrate about what I can do better, well - I just want to share about life situation.Somehow, luck is a part of life, and everyone, at one point or another, gets lucky. Luck is also a big part of business life and perhaps the biggest part of entrepreneurial life. At the very least, entrepreneurs must believe in luck. Ideally, they can recognize it when they see it. And over time, the best entrepreneurs can actually learn to create luck.

But luck in the business is different from regular old luck, like when you find $20 on the sidewalk. First of all, being lucky in business has an intoxicating underbelly called believing you're smart. No one actually believes that he should take credit for finding $20 on the sidewalk. But when people get lucky in business, they are often convinced that it is not luck at all that brought them good fortune. They believe instead that their business venture succeeded thanks to their own blinding brilliance.

What I know, the big challenge is that everyone -- the press, your shareholders, your colleagues, your significant other, and your parents -- will work hard to convince you otherwise. They will tell you, over and over again, that you are in fact a genius and should take complete credit for all the great things happening to your company. Why? Because to them, you are one of the following:

  1. A source of professional gain
  2. A source of financial gain
  3. A boss
  4. A lover
  5. Their pride and joy

Simply, none of these relationships provide incentive for any of these people to tell you the cold hard truth about your entrepreneurial success: You may have gotten just plain lucky *sigh*
From my perspective, the second difference between business luck and everyday luck is that luck in business can be created, whereas everyday luck cannot. You can't will yourself to find $20 on the sidewalk. But you can create a company that gets lucky more often than the average company. Indeed, there is a pseudo-scientific formula for creating business luck. The key element is this: Lucky things happen to entrepreneurs who start fundamentally innovative, morally compelling, and philosophically positive companies.

I guess this sums up how I feel: Was I lucky? You bet - I was lucky. But I was also smart: smart enough to realize that I was getting lucky... I have found someone that again breaking my life.

Internet and Beyond

My brain working so fast lately, dont know why? Anyway just in my head suddenly and I would like to sharing of information on YouTube and other Social Networking websites can be visualised and shared now.

The users can now upload the data they want to visualise at an experimental website manyeyes and check the technical information they need to know about their information on the web.
Reading a journal in the internet showing me that scientists at the Watson Research Centre of IBM in Cambridge, Massachusetts created the site to help people publish and discuss graphics in a group says the report. There is a good scope of analysis and the commenting on other's works by visualising the data through different tools and discover unexpected patterns in the data.
Now the users can embed images and links to their visualisations in websites or blogs, just as they can embed YouTube videos.

My friend told me a wise words " The gift of Internet is that everyone can participate, and the tools can be brought to a much wider audience." But somehow, "the great fun of information visualisation," and my comment is that it gives you answers to questions you didn't know you had!

Indonesia: Conspiracy Theories

Why did the market go up today after bomb? well, it was the PPT at work

Why you should not trust the employment figure or inflation figure?
well, the govt manipulates them

What causes bubbles in market?
politicians

Why are gold prices down?
Oh, the govt manipulates the gold prices.

If you look around in the market , you will see such conspiracy theories all over the place. We have become a nation of conspiracy theorists. Everything is a conspiracy according to some people.

Where do such conspiracy theories come from and why do they work? Understanding them can make you a better trader.

* There are leaders and followers
* There are good leaders and there are bad leaders
* Every leader has a agenda.
* Some leaders have positive agenda some have negative agenda.
* Leadership is about :
o ability to "attract" followers
o make followers "believe" in certain things
o prevent other leaders from "poaching" followers
o take followers from point A to B "willingly"
* Mental model manipulation is at the heart of successful leadership
* Autocratic leaders control, followers by use of force. But that is coercive leadership model where the followers are not "willingly" following "the great leader".
* Leaders manipulate followers mind using communication.
* Positive leaders change followers mind using rational and positive messages.
* Negative leaders change followers mind using conspiracies and irrational arguments.
* Behind every conspiracy theory are leaders who are trying to get "willing" followers.
* Most people are followers.
* There are very few leaders in the world, but there are vast number of followers.
* Big and consequential changes happen in the world, or in a company, or in your life if you come across good leaders.
* If you study history, you would see that every big change in the world was bought about by a good leader.
* There are many failed leaders in the world. In the absence of good leaders they attract followers using mental manipulation.
* Conspiracy theories are very good way to attract followers.
* Conspiracy theories can explain in simple terms things to followers.
* Powerless followers love conspiracy theory because it allows them to rationalise their failure and externalise the problem. They create a complex web of conspiracy theories to explain away everything. If you try and expose their logic with rational thinking and arguments, they will throw more nuanced conspiracy theories.
* The conspiracy theory proponents have their own rules of economics not proven by any existing economic theories. They are pseudo economists.
* Religions, cults, political parties, labor leaders, media commentators and so many other people with access to media use conspiracy theories very skillfully to "attract" and "retain " followers. Scratch deeper when you hear somebody propogating a conspiracy theory and you will find a leader trying to influence you. That person has some motive for it.
* If you want to understand how to manipulate minds study either religion or advertising.
* Both the disciplines use simple communication tricks to " influence" and "change" your mind. They do it with velvet gloves and leave no finger prints behind.
* If you do not control your mind, there are several outsiders waiting to influence it.

Why is understanding how conspiracy theories work is important to trading, because you trade what you believe. People trade their beliefs, not necessarily what will make them most money. Classic example of that are gold bugs and perma bears... Indonesia oh Indonesia...

Next question: do you think it will be another avalanche?

Outsourcing Your Life...

I was thinking the other day about how, in these awful economic times, outsourcing is affecting the economy.  I'm not referring to manufacturing because frankly if the defect rate & cost is lower and the time to market is not significantly impacted, that decision is a no brainer.

I'm referring to the companies who have chosen to outsource, for example, their call centers, network operation, etc.  The benefits of cost and 24/7 availability is clear.  However level of service and revenue generation are at most worse than the US economy.

But the killer is that hundreds of thousands of jobs that would normally pay between $10-20 are gone.  I think those types of jobs are the ones that provide the foundation for our macro economy.  Those jobs are fuel for car purchases, mortgage payments, etc.

I worked at a company where our boss (who is trying to be an absolute superstar) had a wild proposition:

- Provide world class service looking out for the best interests of the customer first in a simple way (i.e., don't "jam" offers down their throats)
- The revenue will follow** (sensitive)

He was right.  He's done on a smaller scale and a huge scale.  It can be done but most companies don't do it or worse don't even believe it can be done.

In the meantime, our economy keeps sucking wind and when it comes back, we still won't have the valuable foundation that these types of jobs provide.

Next question: are we an asset or liability in the company?

VoIP Theory and Beyond

Following my early journal - recently, I just read an article again; theorizes that the stock market meltdown and slowing economy will actually spur faster VoIP growth.

It was mentioned that more and more people will be under the gun to cut costs. There are a number of ways to cut costs but one way to cut costs tends to jump out at you -- the PHONE BILL. This will force many companies to take the digital/VoIP plunge. As a result, VoIP sales will increase significantly over the next year or two.

Additionally, stock market crash has effectively pulled in the VoIP growth curve by 6-12 months or more! As identified in the Post-Melt Down chart, VoIP sales may increase by 200-300% over previous forecasts. Thus, next year's VoIP growth can be expected to jump from 4% to 8% or 12% or more next year... (let see!)

Of course theories, and pretty chart graphs can be made to make anything look good. Is the VoIP industry truly headed towards faster growth in this economic climate? I tend to agree, even with comment from my colleague. There are indications that not only enterprises, but also municipalities and public services are deploying VoIP to save on costs.

Anyway... my simple comment that some example doesn't make it the rule, I do think companies, municipalities, etc. are looking to cut costs and VoIP is one sure-fire way to do just that... rest is about people behaviour

VoIP in Bear Economy

I just read an interesting report by IBISWorld just named VoIP as the predicted #1 performer In 2009 - it even beat video games. Yet more proof that VoIP isn't dead and indeed VoIP is the one shining bright spot in an otherwise dismal bear economy as we know currently.

VoIP is indeed defying the "bears" of the economy. Reminds me of when Tarzan defied that huge tiger in the woods. Sure, the tiger got on top of Tarzan, this was just a training exercise for Tarzan's "You don't want to tick me off stare." At the end of the wresting match, Tarzan just looked at the tiger, the tiger knew he lost, and walked away. Tigers don't mess with Tarzan and apparently this symbolic symptom in bear of the economy don't mess with VoIP.

Check out the news release below after you watch Tarzan give the tiger his patented stare down:

Top 10 Industries
By IBISWorld (2009)
The recession is crippling businesses across the nation, but several industries will remain unscathed by the current economic strife, according to recent Recession Updates published by industry research firm IBISWorld.  As one of the nation's most respected independent publishers of business intelligence research reports, IBISWorld today announced the top 10 industries expected to have the largest revenue growth in 2009:

INDUSTRY REVENUE GROWTH 2009
1.    Voice Over Internet Protocol Providers (VoIP)   20.1%
2.    ecommerce & Online Auctions                                12.6%
3.    Biotechnology                                                               10.3%
4.    Engine, Turbine & Power Transmission               10.0%
       Equipment Manufacturing
5.    Scheduled Bus Service                                                 9.2%
6.    Court Reporting Services                                            7.7%
7.    Community Housing Services                                   7.5%
8.    Search Engines                                                               6.5%
9.    Family Counseling                                                        6.1%
10.   Video Games                                                                   5.8%

"Emerging industries remain well represented and continue to benefit from technological innovation and cost advantages," explained George Van Horn, senior analyst with IBISWorld.  "Unfortunately, the impact of the recession is equally pronounced among sectors directly benefitting from the social and financial stress associated with the downturn."

While only five percent of all U.S. industries are fortunate enough to be positively impacted by the recession, IBISWorld research estimates that nearly 60 percent of all industries are negatively impacted or worse.

Next question: Everywhere in the world! What do you think?

2009 Another Storm?

Hard to say! Well...understandably, many investors are glued to high-frequency indicators such as macro data and corporate announcements as they try to feel for an inflection point in the crisis. Portfolios tend to be positioned with respect to this – either on the defensive side of the line, anticipating a prolonged spell of worsening news, or on the
riskier side, hoping to benefit from the first glimmerings of light at the end of tunnel.

The outlook for the global economy continues to deteriorate. Incoming data have, almost uniformly, surprised on the downside. A combination of declining wealth, notably higher uncertainty, and financial disruptions appears to have led to sharp declines in demand around the world. A significant contraction in international trade is helping to propagate these shocks around the globe. Sharply contracting output is likely to lead to further declines in demand as income falls rapidly. There are scant signs that the momentum of this negative cycle is waning.

Policymakers are trying to contain this process through actions on three broad fronts: monetary, fiscal, and financial. Inflation continues to fall rapidly in most countries in the face of lower commodity prices and rapidly growing output gaps. Central banks are lowering short-term interest rates where they can. However, for an increasing number
of central banks, conventional policy tools are at, or are fast approaching, their limits. They are moving on to other options. Fiscal policy is easing in many countries as well, but not with equal force. China, Russia, and the United States appear set to implement the most aggressive fiscal expansions.

Somehow, the biggest changes have come in those countries that are particularly exposed to international trade. I expect the Japanese economy to contract through the end of this year, with real output GDP falling 3-1/2%. Similarly, I am seeing real output to fall in Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan this year, and we expect the Russian economy to stagnate (ref from many financial news). I see this all the major industrial economies to contract substantially this year, and only sputtering recoveries until 2010. For emerging economies, 2009 is likely to be the worst year of growth performance since the crisis of 1998. For the global economy as a whole, this is likely to be the worst year for growth in almost 60 years.

Ironically, the long term shape of the world is easier to describe than the short-term transition. How quickly the private sector deleverages and whether it responds to fiscal and monetary stimulus are open questions. But regardless of how the world gets there, we believe that it will have certain characteristics – less leveraged, less imbalanced in trade flows, more regulated and so on.

Next question: Can we change this condition?
